Poundbury isn't on the tourist map like Dorchester or Weymouth — but it rewards a stop, and The Walnut Gallery is a good reason to make one.
A different kind of town
Set in Poundbury, Dorchester's distinctive model urban quarter, The Walnut Gallery is built on Duchy of Cornwall land and inspired by the vision of King Charles III when he was Prince of Wales. The gallery sits within a vibrant community of independent shops, cafés, homes and businesses.
Poundbury is known for its classical architecture and wide leafy streets — and, unusually for somewhere this pleasant to walk around, parking is easy.
The Walnut Gallery sits in the heart of it, on Crown Street West between Queen Mother Square and Crown Square, surrounded by cafés, restaurants and boutique shops.

Queen Mother Square and the streets around it hold Poundbury's cafés, restaurants and independent shops — all within a few minutes' walk of the gallery. Browse the shops, stop for coffee or lunch, and pop in to see what's hanging.
Bringing children?
A short walk from the gallery is the Great Field, Poundbury's big open park. Its play area, the Great Park, is one of the best around — its towers and structures are modelled on Poundbury's own buildings — and the Pavilion in the Park café sits right beside it. We take our own children there regularly.
Is Poundbury worth visiting?
Yes — give it a morning or an afternoon. The architecture alone is worth a wander, the shops and cafés are independent rather than chains, and The Walnut Gallery is free to visit, open Monday to Friday, 10am–5pm, with Saturdays by appointment.
How far from Dorchester or Weymouth?
Poundbury is about a mile west of Dorchester town centre — a 20-minute walk or a short drive. From Weymouth it's around 8 miles, roughly 20 minutes by car. See plan your visit for parking, trains and accessibility.
